"Waters Edge" Advertising Campaign

Texas A&M Galveston

An island campus is not a limitation. It is the whole pitch. Texas A&M University at Galveston, the ocean-oriented branch campus of Texas A&M on Pelican Island and home of the only maritime academy on the Gulf of Mexico, needed to grow student enrollment. The university turned to WWC, a Houston marketing and advertising agency, for the Waters Edge campaign, a multichannel advertising effort spanning television, outdoor, magazines, newspaper, and a dedicated splash page, all built on a single idea, an education defined by the water that surrounds it. The campaign delivered a 16% increase in enrollment across its 2018 and 2019 run and earned 2 awards from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), Best Institutional Identity Marketing Program and Best Print Advertising. For a specialized university in a crowded higher education market, the work turned geography into identity and identity into growth.

Few universities can teach at the water's edge. Texas A&M University at Galveston can. The ocean-oriented branch campus of Texas A&M sits on Pelican Island, home to the Texas A&M Maritime Academy and marine and maritime programs taught steps from the Gulf. That setting is a genuine advantage, but an advantage only matters when prospective students see it. TAMUG asked WWC for an advertising campaign with a single mandate, increase student enrollment. The work needed to give the campus a distinct institutional identity and carry it across the media where future students and their families were already paying attention.

WWC created Waters Edge, an advertising campaign built around what set the campus apart, an education shaped by the sea. The idea ran across television, outdoor, magazines, and newspaper, with every placement reinforcing one consistent institutional identity instead of competing messages. A dedicated splash page gave the campaign its digital landing point, turning broadcast and print impressions into a place where prospective students could learn more and take the next step. Rather than a scattered media buy, TAMUG received a single recognizable campaign, one story about life and learning at the water's edge, delivered wherever a future student might encounter it.

The mandate was growth, and Waters Edge delivered it, a 16% increase in enrollment over the campaign's 2018 and 2019 run. The work also earned recognition from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, which honored it as Best Institutional Identity Marketing Program and Best Print Advertising. More importantly, it gave a specialized campus a clear and confident identity, proof that when a university knows exactly what makes it different, advertising only has to help everyone else see it.
