How is this different from a normal BI tool?

Most BI sits on top of a warehouse that somebody loads on a schedule, so you are always looking at a copy. Incorta reads the source directly, which removes both the delay and the argument about whose number is right.

Do we need a data warehouse first?

No, and avoiding that is much of the appeal. Direct Data Mapping is designed to remove the ETL and warehousing step rather than sit behind it.

Can it sit inside our intranet?

Yes. That is how we usually deploy it, embedded in SharePoint so the dashboard is part of somebody's normal day instead of a separate destination.
