Branding

Children's Learning Institute

Two respected research centers became one institution, and the new institution needed an identity to match. The Children's Learning Institute (CLI) emerged from the merger of the Center for Academic and Reading Skills (CARS) and the Center for Improving the Readiness of Children for Learning (CIRCLE). Part of UTHealth Houston and the designated State Center for Early Childhood Development for Texas, CLI combines data and studies from the fields of psychology, neurodevelopment, education, and child development to provide learning solutions derived from and supported by documented research. WWC developed the CLI brand, from visual identity to tagline, and employed it throughout the institute's collateral, signage, and website. Educators, families, and policymakers across Texas gained one recognizable mark for evidence-based early childhood education, an identity as credible in a research journal as it is in a classroom.

A merger creates capability. It rarely creates clarity. When the Center for Academic and Reading Skills and the Center for Improving the Readiness of Children for Learning combined to form a single institute at UTHealth Houston, the new organization held serious research strength in psychology, neurodevelopment, education, and child development, but no unified identity to carry that work to the educators, families, and school systems it serves. CLI asked WWC to develop the brand for the merged institute, one credible enough for an academic research environment and clear enough for classrooms and communities, and to apply it consistently across every touchpoint.

WWC developed the CLI visual identity, brand, and tagline and put them to work everywhere the institute meets its audience. The identity distills an academic merger into one confident mark, signaling research rigor without feeling institutional. WWC then extended the system across printed collateral, environmental signage, and the institute's website, so a teacher picking up a training resource, a family walking into the building, and an administrator researching programs online all meet the same organization. Print, outdoor, and digital advertising carried the new identity into the education community, giving CLI's research-backed learning solutions a presentation as disciplined as the science behind them.

The clearest measure of a brand is how long it holds. More than 20 years after the merger, the institute still operates as the Children's Learning Institute, now part of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, with roughly 300 experts advancing learning and health outcomes for children statewide. Along the way, multiple CLI projects earned Addy awards and Art Directors Club Gold awards. More importantly, the brand gave a newly merged research organization what it lacked at the start, a single credible identity for everything it does.
