"Mosquito" Ad Campaign

First State Bank

The surest way to sound local is to celebrate what only locals love. For First State Bank, a community bank serving Clute, Lake Jackson, and Manvel in Brazoria County on the Texas Gulf Coast, WWC created the "Mosquito" ad campaign, advertising built around the town's most unlikely icon. Clute hosts the Great Texas Mosquito Festival, and the campaign's anchor print ad saluted the event's 25th year with a single tiny mosquito and a headline that claimed the pest as a point of pride. Supporting outdoor work carried the same plainspoken voice, pointing drivers to the nearest branch and announcing the bank's expansion toward Arcola. The campaign turned more than 45 years of hometown familiarity into a competitive position no larger bank could copy.

Local is the most borrowed word in banking. First State Bank had served Clute, Lake Jackson, and Manvel for more than 45 years, long enough to know Brazoria County the way only a neighbor can. It needed advertising that made that local identity unmistakable in a category short on distinctive voices, while showing the bank was more than a little hometown operation. First State Bank turned to WWC for a campaign that could only belong to a Gulf Coast Texas bank, one that would sharpen its hometown position while signaling growth into new communities like Arcola.

WWC built the campaign around the one asset no competitor could borrow, Clute's own Great Texas Mosquito Festival. The anchor print ad set a lone mosquito in open white space and congratulated the festival on its 25th year under the headline "In Clute, the mosquito isn't a pest. It's a tourist attraction." Outdoor boards extended the same plainspoken register. "Straight-shootin' bank. Straight ahead." pointed drivers to the nearest branch, and "Today Clute, Lake Jackson and Manvel. Tomorrow Arcola." turned expansion news into a neighborly one-liner. Each concept typically ran alongside a second ad spotlighting the bank's 8 area branches, wit balanced with proof of reach. The pairing made the position plain, a small town bank with the power of a national institution.
