"HUMAN" Annual Report

BakerRipley

An annual report usually turns a year of work into numbers. BakerRipley's work is people. For more than a century, the community development organization has built vibrant communities to keep Houston a place of opportunity for all who are working for a better life, delivering a wide range of community-based programs that benefit youth, families, and seniors across Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast, reaching more than half a million people each year. WWC, a Houston marketing and technology agency, designed BakerRipley's "HUMAN" annual report, one of several campaigns WWC has created for the organization, as an editorial piece that leads with the people behind the programs instead of the data alone. Produced in print and digital editions, the report gives donors, partners, and civic leaders a document worth reading, and gives one of Houston's largest nonprofits a report that sounds like the neighbors it serves.

Impact at scale can read like a spreadsheet. BakerRipley serves more than half a million people across Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast each year, through programs that help neighbors earn, learn, and belong, from youth education to family services to senior care. Its annual report had to account for that year to donors, partners, and the community without reducing the people in those programs to line items. BakerRipley asked WWC to design a report that treated its numbers as the product of human effort, not the story itself.

WWC answered with a single word. The "HUMAN" annual report concept puts the youth, families, and seniors in BakerRipley's programs at the front of the story and lets the year's results follow as evidence of their progress. WWC handled creative direction, design, copywriting, and photography, building an editorial structure and visual language that readers move through as a narrative rather than a filing. Produced in both print and digital editions, the finished report works as both an accountability document and a piece of storytelling, one that lets donors and partners see immediately who the work is for.

The "HUMAN" report earned its reception the honest way, by being read. The piece was well received by BakerRipley's board, staff, and donors, and it marked a first for the organization, the first year its annual report existed as a true digital edition rather than a posted PDF. More importantly, a document that could have been an obligation became an argument, proof that a year of numbers is really half a million stories.
