Smart irrigation only works when the people who run it can reach it. Weathermatic, the world's leading provider of smart irrigation controllers, has built water management hardware since 1945 and now has more than 200,000 controllers installed around the world. When the company set out to extend its SmartLink platform beyond the control box, it turned to WWC, a Houston marketing and technology agency, for app development and user experience design. WWC designed and developed the SmartLink App, a mobile application that gives landscape contractors and homeowners the ability to manage their irrigation systems from the palm of their hand. Built with Flutter and MongoDB, the app brings scheduling, monitoring, and control to the phone, turning one of the industry's largest installed bases of smart controllers into a system its users can run from anywhere.
Hardware leadership created a software expectation. Weathermatic built its reputation as the world's leading provider of smart irrigation controllers, with decades of irrigation expertise and an installed base spanning the globe. But a smart controller is only as useful as the access it offers. Landscape contractors managing dozens of properties and homeowners managing a single yard both needed a way to adjust, monitor, and control their systems without standing in front of the hardware. Weathermatic asked WWC to design and develop a mobile application for its SmartLink platform that would put complete irrigation management in every user's pocket.
WWC designed and developed the SmartLink App around one idea, that managing an irrigation system should be as simple as checking a phone. The user experience work focused on clarity, surfacing zones, schedules, and system status so a contractor overseeing a portfolio of sites and a homeowner checking a backyard both find what they need in seconds. WWC built the app in Flutter and engineered its MongoDB backend, connecting both to Weathermatic's control API so data stays current on every device and every command reaches the hardware it controls. The result moves irrigation management out of the control box and into the field, where the work actually happens.
The SmartLink App remains in use today, keeping remote irrigation management where it belongs, in the hands of the people responsible for it. Contractors and homeowners monitor and control their systems from anywhere, and Weathermatic's SmartLink platform now reduces the manual adjustments and on-site visits that once defined irrigation maintenance. Mobile access has become part of how Weathermatic customers manage water every day. More importantly, it turned the industry's leading hardware into a connected experience customers carry with them.
